I went to Golubac, which is a little off the beaten track, for only one reason. It was here in 1428 during a failed attempt after recapturing the fortress from the Turkish hands, the Polish knight Zawisza Czarny from Garbow, known throughout Europe, died. Built by Hungarians on at the turn of the 13th/14th century, the fortress looks impressive even today. Picturesquely situated on the steep bank of the Danube, it can charm even the most demanding tourist.
